29 AugPrivate Air Charter: They’re Flying…Why Am I Grounded?

The Private Jet Pilots Considerations

Ever wondered why some private aircraft can takeoff or land at a particular airport and time while others can not? Many factors influence a pilot’s decision when filing a flight plan including: aircraft performance, operational control procedures, weather, altitude of the airport and weight of the passengers, crew and fuel. These factors make it difficult to predict flight times, fuel stops and airport selection. I have listed below each category and how it may affect your particular flight.

Aircraft Performance
Not only does each aircraft type have its own performance characteristics, but each individual plane may have different weights, modifications and operating procedures. For example: a typical Citation II has a shorter range than one with a High Gross Kit modification, which allows it to take off and land with additional fuel onboard. Also, different avionics can affect the weight and balance of an aircraft. So, it is entirely possible for one Citation II jet to have a range of 1,000nm while another can travel 1,900nm on the same day and route.

Operational Control Procedures
There are over 3,000 FAA certified aircraft operators in the country, and each follows operational procedures which the FAA and third-party auditing firms approve and routinely review to hold aircraft operators accountable.

Weather
Wind, precipitation and temperature will affect an aircraft’s performance characteristics especially when flying into or out of airports with a runway length less than 6,000 feet. If the runway is wet for example, the aircraft may have to reduce the amount of fuel it has on board to compensate for the slower stopping speed. Or, a high temperature which thins the air may reduce the aircraft’s ability to climb. Pilots speak with a certified weather briefer prior to each flight to help them plan accordingly. Since weather is variable, an original itinerary that forecasts a direct flight might adjust to include a fuel-stop. On the other hand, strong tailwinds may permit a direct flight when a fuel-stop was initially planned.

Altitude
High altitude offers unique challenges to pilots as the air is thinner and requires faster takeoff and landing speeds. Surrounding mountains pose additional challenges, which is why, for example, Aspen Airport (ASE) has instituted a curfew between dusk and dawn to increase safety margins.

Weight
Weight is one of the more controllable performance variables and is typically adjusted to compensate for weather and altitude. The number of passengers, crew members, baggage and fuel are all estimated prior to flights in order for the crew to forecast a safe takeoff and landing.

Most private aircraft operators incur additional costs when they have to delay, re-route or make an additional fuel stop. So, when a crew recommends an alternate, you can be assured they are looking out for your safety.

22 AugPerimeter Security Systems – Airports

Perimeter Security systems are of utmost importance to “airport security”. With passenger lines stretching from here until tomorrow, airports could not function without proven perimeter security systems. The pictures of passengers patiently lined up before metal detectors shows acceptance for Airport security systems. The other, unacceptable option is failed Perimeter
security systems leading to unthinkable 9-11 tragedies and empty planes in the skies.

Accidental Entry – Airport Security
People sometimes penetrate airport security by accident. For example, three boys on a sail boat wound up a runway at JFK airport. The intrusion led to upgraded airport Security regulations and enhanced perimeter security equipment. Yet, intrusion by innocent people is an every day occurrence for airports despite advanced perimeter security measures.

Airport Concourse – Security Systems
Concourse security focuses most of its attention on screening processes while perimeter security deal with threats beyond the airport terminal. Perimeter Security is vital as some airports may be protected by tall fences designed to keep out intruders. Security Systems for airports on the East and West Coasts have marine borders with large open areas. The airport’s perimeter security relies on a combination of patrols by the coast guard, dogs and high tech Perimeter Security systems.

Armed Guards – Perimeter Security
Do armed guarded enhance airport Perimeter Security? The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) adopted an on-line baggage
screening to speed up boarding time. They also created a elite police force armed with machine guns as seen in European
airports. Their role combines both perimeter security and airport Security roles in the event airport security is breached. While checking carry-on luggage, they also screen travelers for suspicious behavior.

Technology – Perimeter Security
The best hope for assuring airport security is the one least talked about – the companies and technology airports implement
security-based technology for maintaining a safe and secure airport. These include iris recognition, facial recognition, ID
validation, fingerprint biometrics and others. Just as important is technology that verifies suspicious activity that does
not pose what is not a viable threat. For example, thermal-imaging surveillance that provides real-time security perimeter
data to airport personnel.

CCTV systems – Security Systems
For years, airports have used CCTV systems manned by people watching large banks of monitors. While still a component of
airport security system, the CCGTV systems have been upgraded b y new components and new analysis techniques. The “alarm”
triggered may be audible or configured to speak the warning. Experts know “Cameras data don’t stop intruders. People stop
intruders”. CCTV systems offer enhanced perimeter security to protect airports from Accidental Entry.

11 JulLow Cost Airline. Low service level?

Low cost airlines are now common place in our society and since there launch, traveling to foreign countries is now possible for the masses.

Easy Jet are considered to be the founders of low cost air travel, starting there operations from London Luton Airport. Over the years, Easy Jet has grown and now flies to many European countries. As Easy Jet grew, more and more airlines jumped on the bandwagon. Ryan Air, BMI Baby and FlyBe to name a few.

Not so long ago, I had cause to travel from the UK to France on a regular basis. As there were low cost airlines operating from my local airport, East Midlands, I decided to sample a flight and flew with BMI Baby. At that time, BMI Baby, the low cost arm of BMI (British Midland International), were flying to Paris CDG. It was a really convenient service and took about 1 hour. The flight I would regularly take, left the UK at 16:00 and would arrive in Paris at 18:00 local time. I can’t quite remember how many journeys I made with BMI Baby, but I would hazard a guess at about 12 – 15 times.

When BMI Baby launched there low cost operation from East Midlands, the fares were offered at ridiculous prices. Ridiculous to the point that they were offering seats for nothing! Unfortunately there is the issue of tax, so the flight was not actually free. Never the less, a return flight from the UK to France usually cost somewhere in the region of about 50 – 60, including tax. Seems incredible how they could actually make any money from their flights!

Although the costs were low, I felt that the service levels were quite high. My experience flying with BMI Baby was nearly always great. Although the flight is labeled as a no frills flight, the staff were very courteous and food and drink were always available for the short flights. The punctuality was excellent too!

BMI Baby stopped operating the flight from East Midlands to Paris and was replaced by there parent company BMI. In my experience, as soon as BMI Baby stopped flying and handed over the baton to BMI, which in effect is the same company, the prices escalated. It was very disappointing to lose the service as I had always enjoyed flying with them and found the prices easy on the pocket. I have since found alternative ways to travel from the UK to France, but if BMI Baby decide to come back, I will be tempted to come back too!

For people considering moving to another country as an expat, or simply looking at buying a holiday home abroad, there is no doubt that the low cost airlines have opened the door to another world. Another world which was not imaginable not so long ago. Low cost airlines, low service levels? Not in my experience.

Bon voyage!

04 JulLosing My Virginity – To Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy

Since returning from holiday everyone’s been asking, “What’s with the big grin?”

Well if you all must know, I just lost my Virginity, and to be honest, I can’t wait to go back for more. I’m no pushover you understand, but after hearing those rumors, I had to find out what all the fuss was about. So one minute I’m innocently working away at my desk, and the next I’m on the phone to my travel agent booking a seat to Hong Kong for a few nights of heady shopping, sightseeing, and degustation.

I’m not one to tell, but as soon as I arrived at the Virgin Atlantic counter at Sydney Airport they were already turning on the charm, inviting me to a special priority check-in for Premium Economy passengers, where a very friendly agent quickly checked me through with a big smile, remarking that I still had plenty of time to ogle the duty-free goodies before take off. Rather fresh of her I know, but that’s just the start of it.

As we boarded the aircraft, one of the attentive crew suggested I slip into something more comfortable – like my seat – while she fixed me a drink. Looking around with glee I discovered it wasn’t just a line; Premium Economy really did only have eyes for me, and twenty-seven others.

Not only were the seats wider than regular economy class – think Beyonce dancing next to Kylie – the chair configuration of two, three, two across the aircraft provided just the right amount of personal space. In addition, they’ve added extra padding, leg rests, and a generous recline. This baby was definitely built for comfort.

To put me in the mood before take off, I was offered a selection of drinks, including a glass of champagne. I hadn’t intended on letting my guard down so early, but I’m talking real glasses of French champagne, not just plastic picnic goblets of Spumante. What did they take me for, a Business Class passenger?

Slurping noisily on my glass of bubbly, so as to be heard back in economy, I couldn’t help but notice a well-stacked set of amenities bursting out of the seatback pocket in front. I have to say I’m a legroom man myself, however, these colourful kits were more than a handful. Each one was stuffed with socks, eyeshades, pens (who can ever find one when they need to fill out those customs forms?), notepads, tissues, and big enough to air your dirty laundry in on the way home.

Once in the skies, the crew really started to put on the moves. More drinks, impressive meals (by airline standards anyway, although I did tell them they were the best I’d ever had), refreshing hot towels, and tempting snack delights such as ice cream and chocolate bars.

Not long after dinner, the crew quietly dimmed the lights and lowered the shutters. However, this was no time to roll over and go to sleep. The flight was still young, and the fun just beginning. Both Premium Economy and Economy seats are equipped with large seatback video screens. Being sensitive to our individual needs, Virgin offer 50 movies to choose from. I could play, pause, go faster, take it slow, back a little, and, of course, stop if the film was just not doing it for me. Whenever I felt like a break between the action, a huge selection of TV shows, computer games, and audio channels awaited my every command.

After some initial fumbling around, I discovered that each seat has its own phone and email address. Of course, I could have communicated with the outside world, but why bother when the real enjoyment was dialling seat numbers to prank call and heavy breathe other passengers for free until I learnt that my seat number appeared at the receivers end. For those who would rather fly by the motto “all work and no play”, Premium Economy also provides in-seat power supply for laptop computers.

While gadgets might be a boy’s best friends, no airline gets far with me unless they can back it up with a great personality. That’s where the experienced and friendly Virgin Atlantic crew really made my first time special, even announcing over the PA system that they would be delighted for me to fly with them again! They haven’t called yet, but I’m sure they will.

Now you know how I lost my Virginity and still wear the big grin to prove it. But don’t take it from me, give your travel agent a call and tell them “I want what he’s having”.

Lease A Private Jet and Travel in the Lap of Luxury

If the executives of your company have to travel regularly, leasing a private jet can help you in your business to a great extent. Whether you are concerned about time, flexibility, safety or privacy, a chartered executive private jet seems to be the order of the day. Luxury private jets are the signature of high-flying business people. Leasing a private jet for personal use is also beneficial.
The cost of leasing a private jet may be a little high, but the safety and time-savings that they offer easily justify the cost. Leasing a private jet has several advantages:

Its Hassle-free
While using commercial flights, you have to go through the mandatory time-consuming security check-ups. Removing shoes, unpacking and repacking carry-on luggage, standing in queues takes up a lot of time. You may even be required to arrive at the airport several hours early.
On the other hand, imagine no luggage or security checks, no removing your shoes, no queues and no delayed planes. With private jet charter; pilot, crew members and stewardess are available for you 24/7. Your chartered private jet is waiting for you to take off, rather than you waiting for your flight to take off.

Save Precious Time
Time is money for top corporate executives. Being stranded at a commercial airport for several hours is a complete wastage for time. Executives time is valued at and its wastage cant be justified at any cost.
Therefore, executive private jets become the best option. Its time efficient and maximizes productivity of the employees by saving their valuable time.

Luxurious Interior
On a private charter jet you are offered a luxury which you can never dream of receiving in a commercial plane. The seats are extremely comfortable with plenty of leg room. They almost look like a comfortable living room with TV, phone lines, computer as well as fully stocked bars.
Apart from that, the oxygen flow in the interior of a private jet is much superior. On a commercial plane, pilots often reduce the oxygen level to minimize costs aggravating the effects of jet lag.

Guarantees Confidentiality
Executives of giant companies have a busy life. They like to work when flying. Now commercial flights dont make it possible. After all its like risking your companys confidential information by working on a laptop which half a dozen people can see.
Traveling on a private jet ensures the confidentiality of your business. You can work or even conduct business meetings aboard with a relaxed mind without being bothered about spying eyes.
